There are three kinds of pumpkin carving. Jack O’Lantern, Etching and 3D.

Jack O’Lanterns

A jack O’lantern is a hollowed out pumpkin or gourd, like rutabaga or turnip. It’s carved. Once a light is inserted, it becomes a lantern. Jack O’lanterns name come from the phenomenon of strange lights flickering over peat bogs, called Jack O’lanterns (also known as will-o’-the-wisps). It is tied to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a drunkard who bargains with Satan and is doomed to roam the Earth with only a hollowed turnip to light his way.

In Gaelic-speaking regions, Halloween was called Samhain. It was believed to be a day when supernatural beings walked the earth. On the night of 31 October, gourds were carved into Jack-o’-lanterns for these spirit nights to represent either spirits or supernatural beings, or to ward off evil spirits. They were set on windowsills and around houses to keep harmful spirits out of one’s home.

Jack O’lanterns carved from pumpkins became a yearly Halloween tradition here when Irish, Cornish, Scottish and other Celtic influenced immigrants brought their root vegetable carving traditions with them.

To make a Jack O’lanterns, the top or bottom of a pumpkin is cut off to form a lid, the inside flesh is scooped out, and an image—usually a “scary” or “funny” face—is carved out of the rind exposing the hollow interior. We light them with candles or LED lights.

Jack O’lanterns can last a few weeks when left outside, depending on the weather.

Etching Pumpkins

Etching is a simple pumpkin carving technique that removes only the outer layer of pumpkin skin. For more intricate designs, etching involves shaving off the outer layer of the pumpkin’s skin without cutting all the way through. By carving different depths, you can create multi-dimensional designs. This technique allows for stunning light effects when the pumpkin is lit from within.

In a colder climate, pumpkins outside can last a few weeks.

Etching offers several advantages over traditional carving, making it an appealing option for both beginners and experienced artists:

• Increased Detail: Etching allows for far more intricate and detailed designs than carving. The ability to control the depth of the cuts enables the creation of shading, textures, and complex patterns.
• Longer Lifespan: Etched pumpkins tend to last longer than carved pumpkins. Because the flesh is not fully exposed to the elements, the pumpkin dehydrates more slowly.
• Unique Aesthetic: Etching provides a softer, more elegant aesthetic compared to the boldness of carved pumpkins. The contrast between the outer skin and the lighter flesh creates a subtle yet striking visual effect.

3D Pumpkin Carving

This is next level. 3D sculpting turns pumpkins into realistic works of art. This technique is more advanced and requires special sculpting tools, chisels, and patience! Master sculptors can create detailed faces, monsters, or even scenes from popular movies and TV shows. It’s worth a try if you can put time and effort in. Basically, you skin a pumpkin, and can use a variety of sculpting and wood carving tools to carve the meat of a pumpkin into almost anything.
