If you’ve ever tried to draw a portrait, you know it’s difficult. Those amazing portrait drawings aren’t magic either. Successful portraits are the product of a sound method and practice. You can skip the overwhelm and learn the techniques artists use to draw pretty much anything with accuracy. Experienced instructor and portrait artist Linda Laforge can show you what to look for, the methods to use and in what sequence to use them. This workshop offers you the framework to get you started on your next best portrait drawing.
What You’ll Learn in Portrait Drawing for Beginners Workshop
- Details about drawing materials.
- A sequential method for drawing that works for drawing anything – not just portraits.
- Basic intro to value to capture light and shadow and make a portrait appear 3-dimensional.
- Methods of measuring and sighting that help you understand the proportions of your subject and help you identify and solve problems.
- How to use “squinting” to understand the value relationships on your subject and in your drawing.
- How to draw natural-looking facial features through understanding the major structural characteristics of the eyes, ears, nose and mouth.
Art supplies needed:
- Drawing Pad – no smaller than 9” x 12”
- Drawing Pencil Set – 6 or 12 pencils
- Eraser – Kneaded eraser and Art Eraser
- Pencil Sharpener
- Two black and white prints of a Photo of the person you want to draw.
[Students may purchase drawing kits from the instructor for $65 plus HST if they need all of the supplies]

- Final acid-free illustration paper, 11” x 14” for final drawing
