In May 2024, I practiced my butt off to compete in our local art club’s Art Blast. I painted a Mother Earth, something close to my heart and soul and was voted into Round 2. After several attempts at painting David Suzuki at home in 20 minutes, none quite right or successful, I actually managed to complete a decent 30 minute portrait. Not a masterpiece, but it’s him, and not Colonel Sanders, or some random old bearded dud.
Why David Suzuki? He’s a Canadian academic, science broadcaster, and environmental activist who I follow. Love him or hate him, Canadians know who he is. I wanted to paint a portrait of someone recognizable, and someone I admire.
This painting is currently at Gallery 1313 on Queen Street in Toronto for your viewing pleasure as part of the Canadian Stories show.
Artists! If you’re in need of a big challenge, put your time on, set up with reference material (if you use it) and go! I tend to lean towards detail, so this was a great way for me to loosen up my style and really express myself in a painterly way.
The David Suzuki Foundation
