acrylic painting on 18” x 28” illustration board
I had a vision of young Greta Thunberg needing armour, to be protected from the small minded, billionaire misogynists posting bizarre articles belittling and sexualizing her. Is that any way to treat a young lady who wants what we all want and need? A future. That requires a clean, healthy home.
Greta is framed by four panels, each a contemporary celtic knot design entangled with symbols of today’s world. Top left, a pyramid with a coin in it representing greed. Top right, industry and big pharma. Bottom left I had some fun mixing visual metaphors – Uncle Sam with a swastica, waving a flag with an eye like the one from Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale. Keep looking. There’s more! Bottom right I’ve given you a three headed party member hydra.
The four circular designs, representing nature elements are overpowered by the larger panels.
What’s Greta Working to Change?
Soon after discovering there was a climate crisis, Greta Thunberg held a sign saying “School Strike for Climate” outside the Swedish parliament in 2018, when she was 15, pressuring her government to meet carbon emissions targets. By December 2018, more than 20,000 students – from the UK to Japan – had joined her by skipping school to protest.
Climate Change denier, Donald Trump tweeted that she should “work on her anger management problem”, while Russian President Vladimir Putin described her as a “kind but poorly informed teenager”.
She is working to change the minds of deniers and those uninformed on these issues, and she wants a sustainabilty, so we all have a healthy planet to live on.
If you want to Delve a little more deeply, read the info in the links below.
These are the things Greta and her fellow activists are asking governments and big business for:
- Create a safe pathway under 1.5C.
- Climate justice and equity for everyone.
- Follow the Paris Agreement.
- Unite behind the science.
According to science, there have been five periods of mass extinction in the Earth’s history. During these periods, more than 75% of species disappeared and biodiversity decreased rapidly. Today, humanity’s impact on the environment, through natural resource extraction, climate change, and other factors, has led many scientists to assert that we have entered the sixth mass extinction.
